SUMMER READING CLUB: Summer Reading Club Book Logs will end on August 22!

The 2015 Summer Reading Club : Every Hero Has a Story runs from June 20 to August 22. The last day to log in books read is August 22, and children can turn in their logs to get prizes until September 1st.

The Summer Reading Club is open to all children up to entering fifth grade. Read books & earn great prizes! younger, non-readers may participate also! Keep track of early literacy activities to earn prizes!
Please keep in mind...

  • Register in the Children's Room or call 845-268-7700 during library hours.

  • All programs are free, and priority is given to residents of the Nyack School District. Group size is limited. Residents outside of the Nyack School District will be placed on a waiting list and contacted only if there is room in the program.

  • Please notify us of cancellations in order to allow more children to attend our programs.

  • Programs are designed for the intended age group.

  • Please make alternate arrangements for other children for infant and toddler programs.

  • Required registration begins at least one week before each program.

    1000 Books Before Kindergarten:
    This program promotes reading to newborns, infants, toddlers, and children up to Kindergarten. The goal is to have read 1000 books before your child starts Kindergarten. Stop by the Children’s Room any time to sign up, get more information, and your first reading record.



    Thank a Hero Letter Station
    June 20-August 22
    Stop by and write a letter thanking a hero! Whether it’s your parent, a police officer, firefighter, veteran, teacher, or someone else special, everyone loves to be appreciated.

    Collection Box for Military Heroes
    June 20-August 22
    Drop off useful items for our military heroes deployed overseas and the library will ship them. Suggested items include toothpaste, toothbrushes, soap, nuts, playing cards, Granola/energy bars, magazines, baby wipes, Chex Mix, and powdered drink mix singles such as Crystal Light and Gatorade.

    Movies: Every Hero Has a Story
    Ages 3 and up.
    Watch a movie about heroes on the big screen with friends!
    The Incredibles, Rated PG, Tuesday, June 23 at 7pm. Come in pajamas!
    Everyone’s Hero, Rated G, Thursday, August 13 at 1pm.
    The Tale of Despereaux, Rated G, Tuesday, August 18 at 1pm.
    No registration.

    Hero Treasure Hunt
    August 17-22
    Ages 3 and up with adult(s).
    Hunt for special clues in the Children’s Room to be a hero and save the library’s precious books from destruction! Get a prize if you find them all to save the day!

    September is Library Card Month!
    If your child signs up for a library card in September, visit the Children’s Room Desk for a special prize.

    Give a Kid a Book:
    Throughout October and November, the Children’s Room will collect new, unused books for the Library Association of Rockland County’s Youth Services. Books will be given as gifts to children through local charities during the holidays.

    Family Read: Read “Gooney Bird Greene” by Lois Lowry or “No Talking” by Andrew Clements as a family! The whole family can read one of these entertaining stories together and then discuss questions provided by the library. Turn in your answers by December 4th and the children will receive a prize, then the family will be entered in a raffle to win a bigger prize! Ask at the Children’s Desk for details.

    School Closing Crafts
    Select dates from 2-6pm
    Ages 3 and up with adult(s).
    Drop in during the following school closing days to create a cool craft – a different craft for each day.
    Monday, Oct. 12 – Columbus Day
    Wednesday, Nov. 11- Veteran’s Day
    Tuesday, Dec. 29-Winter Break
    Drop in – no registration.

    Halloween Carnival
    Saturday, Oct. 24 from 12-2pm
    For all ages with adult.
    Come in costume for some fun, not-too-scary Halloween activities and win some great prizes!

    Celebrate Election Day!
    Drop by anytime on Tuesday, November 3 to vote for your favorite book character! A chance for children of all ages to be part of the democratic process and get prizes!

    Create a Gingerbread House!
    Saturday, Dec. 19 at 12 noon.
    Ages 3 and up with adult.
    Come and decorate a colorful, edible gingerbread work of art to take home!

    Bouncing Babies

    Apple Cider Pressing

    Children will help make and then taste some cool, fresh apple cider using a hand-operated cider press during this deliciously fun and educational program about apples with the ‘Traveling Naturalist,’ Sara Mayes.

    Feel the chills up your spine as Eileen Stelljes takes you on a fascinating (but not too scary) journey around the Hudson Valley and beyond, with riveting tales about Ichabod Crane and the Headless Horseman, Rip Van Winkle, and others. Introduce yourself to her special guest, a Hessian soldier, who will be happy to share his story as well.

    Woodland Indians of New York
    Tuesday, Nov. 10 at 4:15pm
    Grades 2-6.
    Join the “Traveling Naturalist,” Sara Mayes, as we compare our modern lives to the lives of local Native Americans, using authentic American Indian artifacts and natural objects. We’ll hear an Iroquois legend, play a Lenape game, and more as we learn about these fascinating cultures.

    Book Club: Bad Kitty **
    Monday, Dec. 7 at 5pm
    Grades 2-6
    Read at least one of the following “Bad Kitty” books and join our discussion. Try your hand at creating your own drawing of her. Choose Happy Birthday, Bad Kitty; Bad Kitty: Puppy’s Big Day; or Bad Kitty: Drawn to Trouble.
