SUMMER READING CLUB: Build a Better World!

June 17-August 19.
Join the Valley Cottage Library’s Summer Reading Club! Daily reading habits help children retain information they have learned.

Registration & daily reading recording started JUNE 17. Pick up Reading Logs at the library or print from online. The Club is open to all children from infants to children entering 5th grade.

[Teens from 6th grade and up and adults have their own Summer Reading Clubs! They can register for teen and adult Summer Reading Clubs at the adult reference desk starting June 17th.]

Read books at home & keep track of your reading on your reading log. Younger non-readers can record books read to them, or Early Literacy Activities that they do together with an adult. Everyone will bring their reading/activity logs to the library to win prizes.

1000 Books Before Kindergarten: This program promotes reading to newborns, infants, toddlers, and children up to Kindergarten. The goal is to have read 1000 books before your child starts Kindergarten. Stop by the Children’s Room any time to sign up, get more information, and your first reading record.

A great big “Thank You” and “Congratulations” to our patron Isabella Feeney for creating ‘Turn the Pages’ interactive book display as her Gold Award Girl Scout project! Children and Middle Schoolers are invited to borrow and suggest great books using this permanent display in the Children’s Room. Young children will get a prize when they participate, and Middle and High School kids can earn community service. Stop by to learn more!

Dear Dumb Diary, (PG) Tuesday, August 8 at 7pm. Middle schooler Jamie learns that outer beauty can be deceiving, but inner beauty transcends any exterior, as she sings her way through this entertaining tale of middle school life.

Dolphin Tale, (PG) Wednesday, August 16 at 6:30pm. Sawyer learns about courage, ingenuity, and never giving up, in this true story of a Florida marine aquarium that adopted a tail-less dolphin named Winter.

Reading Buddies

Thursdays, June 29 – Aug. 17 from 4-7pm
Ages 4-10.

Come read with an older buddy! Young readers will register for a 30 minute time slot, then the library will pair them with a teen volunteer to read together, sharing their love of reading while improving skills.

Join us for ValCon, the third annual comic and anime Library Convention! It is free and open to all. Join us for panels, workshops, cosplay, contests, special guests, an artist alley, a vendor alley, and more!

Open Playtime
Mondays, June 26 - Aug. 21 from 10am-1pm (No program July 3)
Ages 5 and under. It’s play time in the Storytime Room, no matter what the weather brings! A great chance to meet other local families while you enjoy books, games, toys and puzzles with your little one(s).
No registration.

Pint-Size Playtime
Fridays, June 30 – Aug. 25 from 11:30am – 1:30pm
Ages 2 and under. Drop in for playtime geared especially for tiny tots. The storytime room will have early development toys, puzzles, books, and activities for babies and toddlers to discover and learn. Meet other caregivers in the community while your little one explores! No registration.

These storytimes are held weekly. Registration is for all days in the entire session. Please notify us if you are unable to make any day in the session as we will contact the waiting list to attend that day only.

Bubbly Babies
Fridays at 10:30am
Ages 2 months-18 months with adult.

Family Math Game Night!

Let’s keep our math skills up over the summer with math games. We’ll explore numbers, patterns, and shapes together through fun activities, puzzles, games, and books. Working with their family, children will use problem-solving skills, logical thinking and strategies to gain a deeper understanding of how math works, all while having fun together! You’ll go home with a packet of ideas and games to play at home all summer.

Come try your hand at acting in the amusing play adaptation of this picture book about being helpful by Robin Pulver. We’ll choose parts, create basic costumes, and read the play together in a fun performance for our adults.

Family Collage Workshop

Monday, August 7 from 4:30-6:30pm
Ages 7 & up with adult(s)

Join Pop Artist and author Michael Albert as he brings his “Modern Pop Art Experience” and Cereal Box Collage workshop to the library. Hear a short presentation about his life and work, then create your own family collage from the same cereal box materials he uses in his creative process. Families will receive a free signed limited edition print of one of his masterpieces as a special thank you gift for participating!
