ValCon Episode IV Mascot Contest

Calling all artists!



VCL will be hosting ValCon Episode IV this summer and we are looking for a new mascot to use on all of our promotional material. Each entry must incorporate “ValCon Episode IV” into the design. Our contest is open to anyone in grades 6-12, so get creative and email entries to Joanna Goldfarb at jgoldfarb@rcls.org by January 8th. The winner will receive a $50 gift card!
Scrawl: Rockland Teens Write 2018

The Teen Librarian Division of the Library Association of Rockland County is proud to announce that they will be publishing their third collection of fiction, non-fiction and poetry written by teens in Rockland County. Submissions are open to anyone in grades 6-12 that lives in Rockland County. Submissions may be no longer than 2500 words in length. Graphic novel pieces may be no longer than 5 pages. This will be a juried publication featuring published guest editors! The book launch will be at a Rockland County Library (tba) in May 2018.

The deadline for submissions is Tuesday, January 16, 2018. Please submit entries to rocklandteenswrite@gmail.com
Teen Yoga

Mondays December 4 and 18 @ 7:00pm



Valerie Vendrame will continue our popular program through the spring. Aside from the benefits of stretching and strengthening muscles, yoga provides teens with healthy coping strategies to help deal with unique stressors: insecurity about changing bodies, pressure to fit in, and challenging emotions. All done in a supportive environment that will keep you smiling and having fun!

Embrace your inner 5 year old at teen story time!
Gather around to listen to a story, then help out the children’s librarians by preparing crafts for upcoming story times. This program is for teens in grades 6-12, and is worth one hour of community service.
A small snack will be provided.

Over the course of 2018, we will have a monthly teen discussion of Star Wars books, with breaks to watch the original trilogy.

Bonus: After each book discussion, we will watch an episode of Star Wars: Rebels.

At the end of the year, we will have a PARTY with trivia and prizes! Teens must attend at least one book discussion to watch a movie, and have attended a minimum of 3 programs to be invited to the party.

Junk Journals

Monday, February 12 @ 6:30



A Junk Journal is a handmade book made up of items you already have, such as scrapbook paper, music sheets, maps, greeting cards, post cards, and anything in your junk drawer that can be glued down. Time will fly in this class as we create tags, fold outs, pockets and learn fun ways to decorate our journals. Bring your "junk" with you.

Didn’t get all of your homework done? No problem. Spend the day in the library finishing up any projects you may have neglected over the break. There will be a librarian in the Teen Corner to help answer your questions!
Guitar for Beginners

Mondays, March 5 and 19 @ 7:00



Burr Johnson will show many music styles in which guitar plays an important role. Pick up one of the guitars provided (or bring your own) and learn the basics of holding the guitar, playing melodies, strumming chords and using the pick. Each student is given individual attention as Burr moves everyone along at their own individual pace.
