ValCon Year 5 Mascot Contest

ValCon is an annual comic convention at the Valley Cottage Library (VCL) in Valley Cottage, N.Y. ValCon celebrates comics, manga, anime, and fandoms. There are panels and presentations throughout the day, an artist alley, vendors, and a cosplay contest. Each year of ValCon brings something new and unique.

The ValCon mascot is used on all promotional materials and social media related to ValCon. The contest is open to teens in grades 6-12 at the time of the contest. The contest will be open from September 24, 2018 to January 7, 2019. The winning entry will be used to promote ValCon Year 5, to be held in July 2019.

Scrawl: Rockland Teens Write

Want to get published?



The Teen Librarian Division of the Library Association of Rockland County is proud to announce that they will be publishing Scrawl 2019, their fourth collection of fiction, non-fiction, and poetry written by teens in Rockland County.

This juried volume will feature published authors as guest editors, be found in libraries throughout Rockland County, and be celebrated with a book launch party in Spring 2019 Submissions are open to anyone in grades 6-12 who lives in Rockland County.

Submissions may be no longer than 2,500 words. Comic-style pieces may be no more than 5 pages. A separate contest for COVER ART is open to anyone in grades 6-12 who lives in Rockland County.

The deadline for submissions is Tuesday, January 22, 2019. Please submit written and hi-res art entries to: rocklandteenswrite@gmail.com

Include the following with your entry:
Name, phone number, email, grade, school, community, the genre of your piece, and a title. You will receive confirmation and a parental consent form.

Warm Up Your Neighbor Project

Now Accepting Donations!



Help your neighbors in need keep warm and toasty! If you like to knit, you can earn community service hours. Donate your knitted or crocheted scarves or hats to the library to receive 10 hours per item. Donations are accepted September through March.

Drop your donations off with Joanna Goldfarb at the library. Open to Nyack School District students.

Paying for College

Joshua Marber, MS.Ed., will advise teens and their families on the college admission process. He will provide helpful information that will get you started on the right road now or give you helpful advice to continue in the process. In this program, participants will learn:
How to get the most financial aid from the government & colleges

When & How to fill out the FAFSA & other financial aid forms

How to search and apply for scholarships

Teen Arms Tournament

November 12 at 6:00 pm



Sign up for the VCL Arms tournament, and have fun fighting your way to the top. This double elimination tournament will give you a chance to try out the Nintendo Switch, and box with all of the crazy Arms characters. A prize for the top player, and pizza for everyone.

Star Wars Author Talk with Beth Revis

November 13 at 6:00 pm



Our Year of Star Wars continues with a discussion of From A Certain Point of View, and a Skype chat with author Beth Revis!

Beth Revis is author of many YA novels, including Rebel Rising, and wrote one of the 40 short stories in From A Certain Point of View. Come ask her about writing a Star Wars novel, what it's like to be an author, and whatever else you're curious about.

Snacks and lightsabers will be provided.

November 14, and December 5 at 7:00 pm



Watch anime shows, eat Japanese snacks, and enjoy the library’s anime collection. This program is a great for big anime fans, and those who are just getting into it.

Teen Story Time

November 15 at 6:00 pm



Embrace your inner 5-year-old at teen story time! Listen to a story, and then help out the children’s librarians by preparing crafts for upcoming story times. This program is for teens in grades 6-12 and is worth one hour of community service. A small snack will be provided.

Star Wars Lock In

December 7 at 5:30 pm



Our Year of Star Wars comes to a close with an exciting Lock In!

Watch a movie, battle with light sabers, and play laser blaster tag. Dinner will be provided. See the information desk to fill out a permission form and to register.

Nintendo Switch Super Smasn Bros. Tournament

December 10 at 6:00 pm



Sign up for the VCL Super Smash Bros. tournament, and have fun smashing your way to the top. After the tournament, stick around for open play. Use our Switch or bring your own.
