ValCon Year 5 Mascot Contest

ValCon is an annual comic convention at the Valley Cottage Library (VCL) in Valley Cottage, N.Y. ValCon celebrates comics, manga, anime, and fandoms. There are panels and presentations throughout the day, an artist alley, vendors, and a cosplay contest. Each year of ValCon brings something new and unique.

The ValCon mascot is used on all promotional materials and social media related to ValCon. The contest is open to teens in grades 6-12 at the time of the contest. The contest will be open from September 24, 2018 to January 7, 2019. The winning entry will be used to promote ValCon Year 5, to be held in July 2019.

Scrawl: Rockland Teens Write

Want to get published?



The Teen Librarian Division of the Library Association of Rockland County is proud to announce that they will be publishing Scrawl 2019, their fourth collection of fiction, non-fiction, and poetry written by teens in Rockland County.

This juried volume will feature published authors as guest editors, be found in libraries throughout Rockland County, and be celebrated with a book launch party in Spring 2019 Submissions are open to anyone in grades 6-12 who lives in Rockland County.

Submissions may be no longer than 2,500 words. Comic-style pieces may be no more than 5 pages. A separate contest for COVER ART is open to anyone in grades 6-12 who lives in Rockland County.

The deadline for submissions is Tuesday, January 22, 2019. Please submit written and hi-res art entries to: rocklandteenswrite@gmail.com

Include the following with your entry:
Name, phone number, email, grade, school, community, the genre of your piece, and a title. You will receive confirmation and a parental consent form.

Warm Up Your Neighbor Project

Now Accepting Donations!



Help your neighbors in need keep warm and toasty! If you like to knit, you can earn community service hours. Donate your knitted or crocheted scarves or hats to the library to receive 10 hours per item. Donations are accepted September through March.

Drop your donations off with Joanna Goldfarb at the library. Open to Nyack School District students.

Teen Interview Practice

Various dates and times throughout January, February, and March. Click the link below to see all options.



Are you a teen looking for a job? Are you preparing for your first job interview? Maybe you need some practice. Sign up for a practice interview.

Interviewees will submit a resume and mock job application, and attend a practice interview. After the interview, the interviewer will give feedback on applications, resumes, and how the interview went. When submitting your resume and mock application, also note if you would like the practice interview to focus on a certain type of job or industry.

This program is for teens in grades 6-12.

Anime Club

January 9, February 6 and March 6 at 7:00 pm



Watch anime shows, eat Japanese snacks, and enjoy the library’s anime collection. This program is a great for big anime fans, and those who are just getting into it.

Harry Potter Book Club

January 17 at 6:00 pm



Do you know your patronus? Have strong feelings about the Quidditch World Cup? Know what S.P.E.W is? You belong in the Harry Potter Club! At our first meeting, we will start with a sorting ceremony, take a trip to Olivander's and talk about Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.

Muggles are welcome.

Teen Story Time

January 24, February 21, and March 21 at 6:00 pm



Embrace your inner 5-year-old at teen story time! Listen to a story, and then help out the children’s librarians by preparing crafts for upcoming story times. This program is for teens in grades 6-12 and is worth one hour of community service. A small snack will be provided.

SAT/ACT Prep

February 9, and February 16 at 1:00 pm




Top SAT/ACT Coach Trevor Hochman will prepare students to ace the SAT and ACTs. The first session will focus on non-fiction, and the second will focus on algebra fundamentals.

Lisa Chang of Nyack Sweets will show you different ways to use chocolate to decorate cupcakes. You can give a sweet treat to your Valentine, or practice self love and give it to yourself.
